4.3 Maternal and Child Health
4.3.1 Fertility Rate
After having been practicing the family planning policy since 1970,
therefore, the fertility rates in Thailand have been declining steadily. From
survey of the population change conducted by the NSO, it was found that the
fertility rate was 2.73 in 1985 and 1.47 in 2005, which meant that in 1985, a
woman aged 15-49 years delivered about 3 children, and then decreased to less
than 2 children in 2005, which was below the replacement rate.
At the present time; in 2013, the total fertility rate is still the same as
in 2005, so that Thailand will be facing a labour shortage in the future. Then the
government should be considering set up plan for supporting women to have
more children.
