Elderly
Number and Growth Rate of the Elderly
There were major factors caused the demographic to change in the
past 50 years had been affected aged structure caused by declining total fertility
rate from 5.7% in 1970 to 1.4 in 2012; birth rate from 40 persons per 1,000
persons (in 1970) to 10 persons per 1,000 persons (in 2012) and a decline of
death rates; from 12 persons per 1,000 persons (in 1970) to 8 persons per 1,000
persons (in 2012). In addition, a better development in health caused people to
live longer. This is global trend, therefore many countries cannot avoid
becoming into aging society. Thailand is also in the cases. The number of the
elderly from the 2010 census was 12% and was estimated to be 19.1% and
26.6% in 2020 and 2030 respectively.
