Sample Design and Method of Estimation

Sample Design

A stratified two-stage sampling was adopted. Bangkok Metropolis and region were constituted strata. The primary and secondary sampling units were enumeration districts and households respectively.
Stratification
Group of provinces in each region and Bangkok Metropolis were constituted strata. There were altogether 5 strata, i.e., Bangkok Metropolis, Central (excluding Bangkok Metropolis), North, Northeast and South. Each stratum was divided into two parts according to the type of local administration, namely municipal areas and non-municipal areas.
Selection of Primary Sampling Unit
A number of sample enumeration districts were selected systematically in each sub-stratum with a sampling fraction of 1 in 20. The total sample enumeration districts was 1,963 from 39,280 enumeration districts.
The total number of sample enumeration districts by region and type of local administration was as follows :

Selection of Secondary Sampling Unit

Households were our ultimate sampling units. A number of sample households were selected systematically in each sample enumeration district as follows :

Private households

Data of every private household enumerated with the long form in every sample enumeration district were proceeded. These private households in each sample enumeration district were selected with a sampling fraction of 1 in 5.

Collective households

Since there were very few collective households in each enumeration district, a number of sample collective households were selected in each sub-stratum (type of local administration) as follows :
Special households : A number of sample special households were selected in each type of local administration with a sampling fraction of 1 in 5.
Institutional households : A number of sample institutional households were selected in each type of local administration with a sampling fraction of 1 in 5.
Thus, the overall sampling fraction was 1 in 100.

  Method of Estimation (Advanced Report)

The results were presented into two parts; part 1 about characteristic of persons and part 2 about characteristic of households. Each part was presented separately for the Bangkok Metropolis and the remaining 75 provinces were classified by region, municipal areas and non - municipal areas.

Let l = 1, 2, 3,..., nhjk ( serial number of sample household )
k = 1, 2, 3,..., mhj ( serial number of sample enumeration district )

i = 1, 2 ( sex )
j = 1, 2 ( type of local administration )
h = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ( region )

Part 1 : Characteristic of Persons Estimate of the Total Number of Persons with Characteristicc

1. The estimate of the total number of persons with characteristicc for the ith sex, jth area, hth region was based on the formula : ..... (1)
where is the total number of persons with characteristic c for the ith sex, lth sample household, kth sample enumeration district, jth area, hth region.
  is the total number of the population enumerated for the ith sex, lth sample household, kth sample enumeration district, jth area, hth region.
 is the total number of sample households for the kth ample enumeration district, jth area, hth region.
 is the total number of sample enumeration districts for the jth area, hth region.
is the total number of the population for the ith sex, jth area, hth region.

 is the total number of persons with characteristicc in the every sample household for the ith sex, jth area, hth region.
  is the total number of the population in the every sample household enumerated for the ith sex, jth area, hth region.

 is the ratio of the total number of persons with characteristic c to the total number of the population in the every sample household enumerated for the ith sex, jth area, hth region.

2. The estimate of the total number of persons with characteristic c for the jth area, hth region was based on the formula :
....................... (2)

3. The estimate of the total number of persons with characteristic c for the ith sex, hth region was based on the formula :

....................... (3)
4. The estimate of the total number of persons with characteristic c for the hth region was based on the formula :

....................... (4)

5. The estimate of the total number of persons with characteristic c for the jth area of the whole kingdom was based on the formula :

....................... (5)
6. The estimate of the total number of persons with characteristic c for the ith sex of the whole kingdom was based on the formula :

....................... (6)

7. The estimate of the total number of persons with characteristic c for the whole kingdom was based on the formula :
....................... (7)

Part 2 : Characteristic of Households (Private Households) Estimate of the Total Number of Characteristic c of Private Households

1. The estimate of the total number of characteristic c of private households for the jth area, hth region was based on the formula :
... (8)

where     is the characteristic c for the lth sample private household, kth sample enumeration district, jth area, hth region.
  is the total number of sample private households for the kth sample enumeration district, jth area, hth region.

 is the total number of sample enumeration districts for the jth area, hth region.

  is the total number of private households for the jth area, hth region.
  is the total number of sample private households for the jth area, hth region.

 is the characteristic c of private households in the every sample private household for the kth sample enumeration district, jth area, hth region.
  is the characteristic c of private households in the every sample private household for the jth area, hth region.
  is the ratio of the characteristicc of private households in the every sample private household to the total number of sample private households for the jth area, hth region.

2. The estimate of the total number of characteristicc of private households for the hth region was based on the formula :
..................... (9)

3. The estimate of the total number of characteristic c of private households for the jth area of the whole kingdom was based on the formula :
..................... (10)

4. The estimate of the total number of characteristic c of private households for the whole kingdom was based on the formula :
