The Survey of Knowledge, Attitude and Family Planning Practice in The Southern Region of Thailand 1994

Since the Thai government adopted a population policy in the Third National Economic and Social Development Plan for 1972-1976. The family planning was promoted throught out the country very successfully. The survey of population change 1989 shows that population growth rate declined to 1.5 percent at the end of the sixth National Economic and Social Development Plan (1987-1991). The population growth rate in the southern region was still much higher than the overage rate of the kingdom and higher than other region. The NSO conducted the survey of Knowledge, Attitude and Family Planning Practice in 1994 in order to obtained data concering women in reproductive ages in the Southern Region, in which consisted of more than one ethnic groups with difference customs and cultural, which might effect the fertility of women in this region as maintained the high level of fertility during the last three decades

Coverage of the Survey

All women aged 15-49 years residing in private household in municipal and non-municipal area in 14 southern provinces.

Methodology

A stratified Two-Stage Sampling was adopted for this survey . Provinces in Southern were constitude Strata. The Primary and secondary sampling units were blocke for municipal areas villages for non-municipal areas and households respectively. The overall sample private households was 10,308. Data was obtained by interviewing the women aged 15-49 years from sampling households.

Data Collection

  1. Demographic and Socio-Economic Characteristics of women aged 15-49 years such as age marital status, religion, language, education and occupation
  2. Knowledge and Attitudes towards Family Planning such as knowledge of contraceptive method, source of knowledge and attitude towards contraception
  3. Family Planning Practice such as contraceptive practice, Duration of first practice, Method of first practice, Practicing contraception, source of contraception and reason for never using contraception
  4. Fertility and Breastfeeding such as age at first marriage, number of marriage, choosing a mate, No. of living children, No of children ever born dead, No. of desired, children, expectation of children's education and breaslfeeding

Operation time of collecting data

The actual field work of the survey was carried out during 1-31 August 1994.

Report publication

The results were published for southern region devid by Buddhist women and Muslim women.
